Chronological vs Corrected Age
Two different ways to describe a baby's age — and the right one depends on whether your child was born early.
Chronological age
The time elapsed since your child was born — regardless of how many weeks pregnant you were at delivery. Use chronological age for vaccinations, age-based activities, and after 24 months for almost every milestone reference.
Chronological age minus the number of weeks your baby was born early. Use corrected age when interpreting growth charts, developmental milestones, and ASQ-3 screening until your child is 24 months old.
If your baby was born before 37 weeks of gestation.
Until your child reaches 24 months of chronological age.
When choosing the ASQ-3 questionnaire interval and when reading growth charts.
After 24 months, use chronological age — most preterm babies catch up by then.
How does this calculator work?
Each ASQ-3 domain contains six items scored 0 (Not Yet), 5 (Sometimes), or 10 (Yes). The calculator sums the six items per domain and compares each total to the official age-interval cutoffs published by the Ages & Stages Questionnaire authors. Scores above the monitoring cutoff are typical, between monitor and refer suggest re-screening, and at or below the refer cutoff prompt a clinician conversation.
All math runs locally in your browser — nothing is stored or transmitted. Read the full methodology, references, and review process for transparency on every cutoff we use.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Get answers to common questions about ASQ assessments and our calculator tool.
What is ASQ and why is it important?
ASQ (Ages and Stages Questionnaire) is a developmental screening tool that helps identify children who may need further evaluation or early intervention services. It covers five key developmental areas and is used by healthcare professionals, educators, and parents to track child development milestones.
How accurate is the ASQ assessment?
ASQ-3 has been extensively validated and shows 85% accuracy in identifying children who need further evaluation. However, it's a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. Always consult with healthcare professionals for comprehensive developmental assessments.
How do I calculate ASQ scores manually?
Each ASQ item is scored as: Yes = 10 points, Sometimes = 5 points, Not Yet = 0 points. Add up the points for each domain (Communication, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Problem Solving, Personal-Social), then compare to the cutoff scores for your child's age interval.
What happens if my child scores low on ASQ?
A low score indicates your child may benefit from further evaluation by a healthcare professional. It doesn't mean there's definitely a problem – early intervention can make a significant difference in developmental outcomes. Contact your pediatrician to discuss the results and next steps.
How often should I complete ASQ assessments?
ASQ assessments are typically done at specific age intervals: 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60 months. Your healthcare provider will recommend the appropriate schedule based on your child's needs.
Is this calculator tool secure and private?
Yes, our calculator processes all data locally in your browser. We don't store, track, or share any information you enter. No personal data is collected, and no login is required to maintain your privacy and security.
